Alteruna teaches multiplayer networking at Game Schools

2023-08-10

Alteruna has been holding network courses at Swedish game development schools during 2023. Alteruna has provided teachers, the teacher’s guides and the multiplayer platform for Future Games in Stockholm and YRGO in Gothenburg. The syllabus of the network courses have contained both general network theory and practical multiplayer game projects.

"The network workshop Alteruna provided for us had professional and dedicated teachers. This allowed the students to come far further in their multiplayer projects than expected and they managed to create some impressive prototypes." Robert Esbjörnsson, head teacher at YRGO for the Game Creator Programmers. YRGO is a higher Vocational Education School.

Alteruna launches a multiplayer platform for game developers

2023-01-15

Alteruna has developed software to facilitate the creation of multiplayer games such as Fortnite. The development tools are easy to install and use, and the service requires no network programming.

“Alteruna Multiplayer bridges the gap between complex network programming and the artistry in creating games and other real-time applications”, says company founder Dag Eklund.

Network programming experience is rare among game creators. The problem is global, and ease of use is not always addressed by the few commercial providers that exist.

"Multiplayer is boiling"

“Metaverse is hot, and multiplayer is boiling but who will make it possible? Without programmers, no multiplayer games”, says Dag Eklund.

Alteruna Multiplayer consists of free tools and upcoming paid development tools for download in the Unity Asset Store. It is the marketplace for the game platform Unity, Alteruna Multiplayer's first integration with a game engine. In addition to the tools, there is a cloud service which is used both for development and for the finished multiplayer game.

“The willingness to pay is higher for the cloud service”, predicts Dag Eklund.

The gaming market is huge. Multiplayer games alone generate sales between USD 20 and 30 billion. It still only makes up a tenth of the entire games market. The market-leading game platform Unity grew in 2021 by 91% in new titles, 31% in new game creators and 44% in revenue.

Effects of the pandemic

“There is a window for new suppliers of multiplayer solutions. 5G enables better performance for multiplayer games over mobiles and the pandemic has fundamentally changed the way we interact with each other, games included”, says Dag Eklund.

Alteruna's cloud service is fully scalable to the number of users and their location, and its price plans follow the natural development of a game project. Evaluate the service without registration or cost, test the idea still for free, develop the game and then launch it on custom pricing plans. The service is subscription-based and supports both prepaid-and postpaid additional data traffic.

Next step

Alteruna is a partner of IBM and wants together with them to scale the company regarding cloud performance and find new customers and areas of use. An easy-to-use multiplayer service could, for example, be used for staff team training. Alteruna itself develops such simulators in VR to train surgical teams and medical teams.
"Such a development will demand that Alteruna hires more developers, build up a sales organization and new support functions", says Dag Eklund.
There are other major areas of multiplayer value outside of the gaming world. Product development in industries sometimes brings together hundreds of engineers and designers working on the same product. Often, they are spread over the world and want to work in a common and simultaneous virtual environment. Nvidia, to which Alteruna is also a partner, has developed such a solution they call Omniverse.
The most talked about concept of virtual worlds with multiplayer support is Metaverse. It was first described in 1992 and re-launched in 2021 by Facebook, which at the same time changed its name to Meta. It includes everything from business meetings in VR to parties, shopping and speculation in virtual property such as real estate and art.

Fact box

Alteruna AB is a technology company in Stockholm, started in 2019. It has three employed programmers and a founder who works full-time in the company. The company has developed simulators to train surgical teams in VR. The medical technology company Stryker has licensed the software. Alteruna has also developed a simulator in a medical treatment that is waiting to be launched.
The new service, Alteruna Multiplayer is a platform- and application independent, scalable, high performance and packaged all-in one cloud solution for developing, implementing, and running multiplayer applications.
